Court gives fresh update on Nnamdi Kanu Bail hearing

The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the hearing of a fresh N1 billion lawsuit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the Nigerian government and the Department of State Service (DSS) to March 18.

Kanu, represented by his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, initiated the suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1633/2023) to enforce his fundamental rights during his detention by the DSS.

Earlier, Justice James Omotosho had scheduled the hearing for March 4, after no legal representation for Kanu was present on January 8.

The suit alleges violations of Kanu’s rights, including the forcible seizure of legal documents and eavesdropping on confidential consultations with his lawyers.

Kanu seeks various declarations and injunctions, along with a demand for N1 billion in damages.

During the recent hearing, the defense counsel claimed they had not received the necessary documents, while Kanu’s legal team asserted that all processes for service had been completed.

Justice Omotosho then adjourned the case to March 18.
