Why Tinubu sacked Wale Edun as Finance minister
Fresh details have emerged on why President Bola Tinubu removed Wale Edun as minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, as well as Ahmed Musa Dangiwa from the ministry of housing and urban development.
According to Leadership Newspaper, Edun’s removal is linked mainly to his health condition.
Sources familiar with the situation said the demands of managing the nation’s economy had become difficult for him. He reportedly fell ill in late 2025 and was taken abroad for medical care. This is also not the first time he has stepped away from a government role due to health matters. Years ago, while serving in Lagos State under Tinubu, he also left office on similar grounds.
He had just turned 70, and sources within government circles say the pressure of the job added to his health challenges. The role of coordinating the economy involves long hours, constant policy demands, and heavy national expectations, which reportedly affected his capacity to continue.
For Dangiwa, the situation is different. His removal is tied to concerns over delivery in the housing sector. Officials said the president was not fully satisfied with the pace of housing projects across the country. Although several programmes were introduced during his time in office, the speed of implementation and visible results were considered below expectations.
Following his exit, Edun expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for giving him the opportunity to serve in different roles within the administration.
He said it was an honour to contribute to national service and reflected on efforts made to stabilise the economy during a difficult period.
He explained that the government met economic pressure at the start of the administration but worked on reforms that helped improve growth and reduce inflation over time.
He also thanked colleagues in government and other sectors for their support during his tenure.
He wished his successor success and said he remains committed to supporting national development in any way possible.
